• I, Maurizio Vezzoli, have been living off photography since 1977.

  • 1968

I began to be interested in photography when my father, also passionate about it, bought a reflex camera, so partly out of curiosity, partly for fun I began to handle it, use it, see what happens.

  • 1972

The first turning point: pooling together all the savings I bought a legend of those years, a used Nikon F, equipped with a first enlarger and all the equipment to develop and print in black and white. Off we go! Camera around my neck and rolls of film in the shoulder bag, the world is mine: the suburbs, the markets, my friends are the first subjects that attract me.

  • 1977

The second turning point: with my friend and partner in photographic (and other) adventures Gianni Ilardo I rent a basement in Varese (basement yes, but right in the center of town) and I start my business as a professional photographer.

  • 1980

First intercontinental trip, I discover India and Nepal, places that have a great impact on me. On the level of photography, they are still virgin places where the act of photographing, or rather of being photographed, finds great willingness on the part of people and arouses pride and enjoyment. People feel important, I find wonderful this availability of both faces and unusual situations and
landscapes that all seem extraordinary and unrepeatable.

  • 1982

I begin to collaborate with the world of large advertising agencies in Milan.

  • 1983

After almost a year of preparation I face the great adventure of a motorcycle trip to the Algerian Sahara in the footsteps of the legendary Paris-Dakar that in those years gets great popularity and attraction. It is five weeks of many emotions and different photographic subjects all interesting: waking up at dawn in the middle of the dunes or traveling in the company of the first stowaways heading to Libya and then to Europe, exploring the markets of the mythical Tuaregs.

  • 1985

I travel a lot, especially to Mediterranean countries such as Greece and Turkey, and I photograph a lot, in addition to advertising work I develop great curiosity and gluttony for food and places dedicated to food such as markets and producers large and small, because photographing is a bit like tasting. Another world I come into contact with, because of the many photographic possibilities it offers, is the world of entertainment: theaters, concerts, sports like basketball [which I find a much more theatrical sport than others]. I am always under the stage, inside the dressing rooms, on the edge of the field and taking photos.

  • 1986

I get married and begin to live permanently in Milan from which I will never move again. I continue to photograph and travel and above all see and discover the forms and lights that animate and shape the world, always mediated by photography.

  • 1988

First trip to the U.S., of course to New York, and of course I am amazed, it is the occasion to take a lot of photos: from museums (the MoMa!) to discovering new equipment (the legendary B&H Photo Video on 9th ave.) and the exaggerated amount of books and publications (Barnes&Nobles and the little bookstores in the Photo District down past 23rd).

  • 1989

The first daughter, a big emotion and a lot of photos, followed in 1991 and 2000 by two more beautiful "children" who quickly (too quickly) became boys, girls, and then men and women (and they began to look at me with condescension pointing out my mistakes...).

  • 1995

With twelve other "crazy" photographers we founded Fotografi Associati, which will edit Taglia&Incolla the first
Italian series of royalty-free digital photographs. The publisher is Olivetti and the partners are the giants Kodak and Apple. The first experiences of digital photography arrive, with all the reasoning that will follow on the evolution of my work and photographic practice.

  • 1996

I finally have a big studio (and a lot of debts....) in the center of what will become the legendary Zona Tortona in Milan, even more photographs (more and more digital) and even more different subjects: from Missoni Sport sweaters to Galbani salami to Shumacher's Ferrari. Then every year in April there is Fuorisalone, which grows and becomes a great moment of cultural and visual stimulation-a real feast for the eyes. I always devote myself to travel related both to professional commitments, but also to curiosity and continuous thinking about the possibilities of photography: this wonderful and powerful expressive tool.

  • 1998

I begin to collaborate with the most interesting Italian large retail store, with a great willingness to innovate and above all ... it is the best! Thus I get to experiment a lot especially in the field of Foodphotography.

  • 2001

A lot of food photogarphy and a lot of time spent right there where food, is born and produced: in farmsteads, in the kitchens of small and large restaurants, in artisan workshops, up to large food industries, I also annually visit the Aeolian archipelago, on which I begin to accumulate a lot of photographic material, quite different from my reportages made abroad.

  • 2006

The mysterious Japan, beautiful and alienating, whole nights spent photographing the Tsukuji Market (now unfortunately disappeared) and its very strange inhabitants: both fish and humans.

  • 2008

I find myself spending a lot of time in the United States where I have an interesting direct experience in the restaurant world always dealing with photography and communication, but also getting to deal with recipes, menus and storedesign. Touring this continent of such different places and people is a great training experience followed as always in my life by a lot of photography.

  • 2012

My first exhibition in Geneva, in a location in the city center, fantastic audience, months of selections, doubts, discussions on the subjects to be presented finally materialize in the pleasure and amazement of doing things that other people like

  • 2013

I am reproposing in Venice About food, the collection already presented in Geneva, in a wonderful location: the Magazzini del Sale in Dorsoduro, how interesting the brick walls of these ancient buildings are? And how pleasant it is to walk around and photograph in this monumental city.

  • 2015

With the Expo, Milan is repurposing itself as a large set of design architecture and event reportage, I am taking the opportunity to take a lot of photographs, which I will have to find a location and use for in the near future.

  • 2016

I am in charge of the opening campaign of the brand new Iper Arese, still a lot of food photography but also a lot of architecture and the first very interesting experiences with video.

  • 2017

I change house, change studio, change neighborhood but
I am always in Milan, I manage to carve out more time to shoot and photograph, I rediscover the city and I finally manage to publish the book (or rather the Notebook) that I had had in my head for a long time: "The Aeolian Islands the sea and  the kitchen," where I present the beauty of these islands and as well as the good of their fantastic gastronomy.

  • 2019

Right before COVID I am able to exhibit the Aeolian work at Palazzo Gromo Losa in Biella, soon after in 2020 I am also at the MIA Fair in the first post-pandemic reopening edition.
